Ice Green reusable bags do not contain lead or hazardous materials

The Canadian media is currently reporting on a story originating from a Florida newspaper saying that independent testing on behalf of the Tampa Tribune has found elevated levels of lead in reusable shopping bags that exceed the “safe” level of lead in children’s toys.

The laboratory testing looked at bags originating in the United States, most of which only came from U.S.-based chains. Wal-Mart was the only store whose bags were tested that also has stores in Canada, but according to the CBC it is not known if the Canadian Wal-Mart bags are the same ones that are used in the United States.

The lead found in these reusable bags is thought to be in the paint on the bags, because paint containing lead is sometimes used by some manufacturers as a cheap alternative to safer paints.
