Although LEDs are currently initially more expensive than more conventional lighting, LEDs far exceed incandescent or halogen lighting and are beginning to threaten compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) when looking at the total cost (including energy and maintenance costs).
An LED light bulb can last you up to 100,000 hours compared to 8,000 for compact fluorescent and 1,000 for an incandescent. LEDs are currently several times more efficient than incandescent lamps, and are now beginning to exceed fluorescent efficiency. In fact, LED light bulbs are so energy efficient that, depending on how often you have them on, they'll actually pay for themselves in just over a year.
Here are some benefits of LEDs:
- LED light bulbs run cool, so they're safer to use than fragile, burning hot halogen and incandescent bulbs.
- LEDs do not use mercury like CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps), so disposal concerns aren't the same.
- LEDs can be integrated into a control system.
- Are small in size and resistant to vibration and shock.
- Have a very fast "on-time" (60nsec versus 10msec for an incandescent lamp).
- The white light cast by LEDs is closer to the color temperature of daylight, and is therefore easier on the eyes and may even lift your mood!
